Madison Neighborhood Moving Guide: Isthmus, Near West, and East Side

Every part of this city moves differently. Here's what to expect where you're going.

A move in Waunakee and a move on Mifflin Street have almost nothing in common besides the boxes. Parking, stairs, building age, and even the time of year the neighborhood turns over all vary.

Here's the short version for each area we serve.

Downtown and the isthmus

Walk-ups, narrow 1920s stairwells, contested parking, and a hard concentration of moves around August 15. Loading-zone timing is the whole game, and rush hour on Johnson or Gorham should be avoided entirely.

A dolly is non-negotiable here — the distance from a legal parking spot to the door is often the longest part of the move.

UW campus

Short, fast, and brutal on cardboard. Roommate-shared apartments, loading docks at the high-rises, and residence-hall rules that change by building. Two-week rentals line up with the lease turnover almost exactly.

Near West and Hilldale

A split personality: Regent and Vilas bungalows with steep basement stairs on one side, newer elevator buildings around Hilldale on the other. Elevator buildings often justify a second dolly.

This is also where a lot of Epic and UW Health households move within the same few square miles.

East side

Schenk-Atwood, Eken Park, Hawthorne, and out toward East Towne. Alley access and garage drop-offs are standard, which makes deliveries easy. It's also the part of town most likely to ask what happens to the boxes afterward — a fair question, and the reason a lot of east-side moves go the reusable route.

The suburbs: Middleton, Fitchburg, Sun Prairie, Verona, Waunakee, Monona

Delivery and pickup are free across all of these.

  • Middleton — established homes and Greenway Station apartments; usually 3- and 4-bedroom packages
  • Fitchburg — driveway-level deliveries, easy garage drop-offs
  • Sun Prairie — mostly apartment-to-first-house moves; four-week rentals are the norm
  • Verona — Epic relocations, often out-of-state arrivals on a tight date
  • Waunakee — family homes with garages and basements; extra wardrobe totes are common
  • Monona — compact ranch homes, short driveways, lots of downsizing moves
