Solve parking first
Everything downstream depends on where the truck sits. Check city loading-zone rules for your block, and if you're near Capitol Square, Johnson, or Gorham, avoid rush hour entirely.
If there's no legal spot, the distance from truck to door becomes the whole move. That's exactly the situation where a dolly stops being optional.
Pack for the stairs, not for the truck
- Keep individual containers under about 40 lbs even if they can hold more — you're carrying them down three flights, not across a driveway
- Books and dishes go in fewer, heavier containers; linens and clothes fill the rest
- Latched lids matter here. Open boxes spill on turns, and you cannot see your feet.
- Uniform sizes stack; mismatched free boxes don't
Use a staging area
Don't run each container from apartment to truck. Move everything to the ground-floor entry or porch first, then load the truck in one continuous pass. It halves the number of trips up the stairs.
Two people, one working the stairs and one working the truck, beats two people both doing everything.
Protect the building
Stairwell corners and door frames take the abuse. Moving blankets and controlled, narrow loads keep you off the hook for damage — and keep you on good terms with a landlord who is inspecting the unit tomorrow.
Then get rid of nothing
The last thing you want after four flights is a cardboard disposal project. Leave the totes stacked at your new place and we collect them.
