Document the unit before you touch anything
Photograph or video every room before you start moving, with timestamps on. Then do it again after the unit is empty and cleaned. Include the oven interior, the fridge, the bathroom grout, and every wall with a nail hole.
This is the single highest-value 20 minutes of a move-out. Disputes are won with photos.

- Cleaning — especially the oven, the fridge, and the bathroom. Budget real time for it, or split a cleaner with roommates.
- Wall damage — nail holes, command-strip paint pulls, and scuffs from dragging furniture and boxes through doorways.
- Trash left behind — the pile of broken-down cardboard in the hallway is a chargeable item at a lot of campus buildings.
Protect the walls while you move
Most scuffs happen at doorframes and stairwell corners when someone is carrying something too wide with no visibility. Latched totes on a dolly are narrower and more controlled than a stack of loose boxes held under the chin.
Moving blankets on dressers and desk corners prevent the other half of the damage.
Coordinate with roommates
One delivery of totes covers a whole apartment, and splitting a package four ways is cheap per person. Color-coded labels keep everyone's things separate so nothing ends up in the wrong car.
